Google Wants to Prevent Trolls From Ruining VR

Trolls are everywhere, spurring Google to work on preventing them from ruining your virtual reality experience. In a recent blogpost, Google VR User UX Designer Robbie Tilton shared details about how the Web behemothic's Daydream Labs is working to "nudge people towards positive social experiences" in VR.

Tilton noted that when people bring together a multiplayer app or game, they might try to "exam the limits" and meet if they can "reach their hand through some other player'south head or stand inside some other avatar's body."

"Even with good intentions, this can make other people experience unsafe or uncomfortable," Tilton pointed out.

The team recently encountered this issue when testing a VR shopping experiment they congenital for the HTC Vive. The experience lets two people enter a virtual storefront and try on different hats, sunglasses, and accessories.

"In that location was no limit to how or where they could place a virtual accessory, and then some people stuck hats on friends anywhere they would stick—like in front of their eyes," Tilton wrote.

This, of course, blocked the person'south vision. If they couldn't remove the chapeau with their controller, the player had no other option just to remove their headset and end the VR experience.

So, the team realised that, just like in actual reality, people in virtual reality need a personal space bubble.

"Past designing personal space effectually each user, you tin can preclude other people from invading that personal space," Tilton wrote.

Another mode Google is working to discourage VR trolls: rewarding positive behaviors. In a recent experiment, the Web team triggered a loud slapping sound and fireworks, for instance, when 2 players give each other a loftier-five. If you lot tried to punch someone, meanwhile, nothing would happen.
